When to Replace Lamp Cords:
- Fraying or Cracking: If the cord’s outer insulation is cracked, frayed, or brittle.
- Discoloration or Burn Marks: Indicates overheating or short circuits.
- Loose Plug or Worn Prongs: A plug that doesn’t fit securely into an outlet can cause arcing and fires.
- Stiff or Brittle Cord: Age and exposure can make cords inflexible, increasing the risk of internal wire damage.
- Exposed Wires: Any visible copper or broken insulation requires immediate replacement.
- Outdated or Non-Polarized Plugs: Modern safety standards require polarized or grounded plugs to prevent electrical shock.
When to Replace Lamp Sockets:
- Loose or Flickering Bulbs: If a bulb does not stay securely in the socket, the internal components may be worn out.
- Burned or Melted Components: A blackened, melted, or scorched socket is a fire hazard.
- Rust or Corrosion: Moisture damage can interfere with electrical conductivity.
- Overheating: If the socket feels hot to the touch, it may be failing.
- Intermittent Functionality: If a lamp turns on and off unpredictably, the socket contacts may be failing.
- Old or Worn Components: If the socket is decades old and shows wear, replacement is recommended for safety.
General Rule:
- For high-use lamps (daily use), check cords and sockets every few years.
- For vintage or older lamps (especially over 20 years old), consider rewiring as a preventative safety measure.
- If a lamp is used in a high-moisture area (bathroom, kitchen), inspect the cord and socket more frequently.
We replace cords and sockets with UL-listed components rated for the appropriate wattage.
